When Northern Ireland started their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign in Hungary on 7th September 2014, they’d won one international game of any kind in three years. No one expected anything from Michael O’Neill’s side, even in a seemingly gentle group lacking a true European giant. What transpired in Group F was nothing short of miraculous. Fuelled by the goals of the enigmatic Kyle Lafferty, Northern Ireland won four of their first five games; their only slip-up coming in Romania. Gareth Bale the big hope for Wales

June 9, 2016 11:37 am Wales-celebrate-qualification-for-2016

Wales are in a major tournament for the first time since 1958, and they’ve been rewarded for their stunning efforts in qualifying with a fixture against old rivals England. The Dragons, currently ranked 26th in the world after peaking at number eight in October last year, will face Wayne Rooney and co in Lens on 16th June and, if they can pick up a point or more against their next-door neighbour, few would bet against Wales advancing into the knockout rounds. Boss Chris Coleman has spoken of Wales’ incredible team spirit in the past, and, with 17 of the 23-man...

The disappointing and underachieving Golden Generation has finally gone and, despite failure in Brazil, optimism is growing among England fans that their side can end 50 years of hurt and finally claim a major trophy. Yes, we know: we’ve been here before, but the 3-2 friendly comeback win against Germany in March, coupled with a perfect record in qualifying, is evidence of progress under Roy Hodgson, now England’s longest-serving manager since Sven Goran Eriksson. Subsequent defeat to the Netherlands tempered expectations a little, but with most of Europe’s big boys struggling for form, there’s no reason why England can’t match...

Republic of Ireland find themselves in a tough group again

June 7, 2016 7:19 pm inpho_00915668

The Republic of Ireland have qualified for their second consecutive European Championships, but the legions of Irish fans travelling to France will be hoping for better memories than those experienced in Poland and Ukraine four years ago. In 2012, Giovanni Trappatoni’s side suffered an ignominious group stage exit, conceding nine goals in three defeats to Croatia, Spain and Italy. The experienced Italian – criticised in Ireland towards the end of his tenure for his outdated tactics – made way for Martin O’Neill in 2013, and the former Aston Villa and Celtic manager is now charged with negotiating another difficult-looking group,...
